The Progress: Primary Election Results Trickle In

(Vernon Robison) – Mesquite City Councilwoman Annie Black appears to have pulled off an upset in the GOP primary race for Assembly District 19 which includes Overton, Mesquite and a small slice of the Las Vegas valley.

Black was carrying over 60 percent of the vote by Monday night, staging and apparent win over the incumbent Chris Edwards who has served three terms in the seat.

With no Democratic contender in this race, the primary election is the main event in this race. The winner will win the seat.

In an interview on Monday, Black said that she was pleased with the provisional results. Black said that she knew the race was going to be a challenge because Edwards came with the advantage of being the incumbent.

“We just worked hard to inform the voters on the important issues in this race,” Black said. “I just wanted people to be able to make their decisions based on the facts. And it really paid off.”

Black said that she will be travelling to Carson City later this summer to monitor what goes on at the expected special session being held.

“I won’t really be able to do anything there, but I will just keep an eye out on what is being done,” she said.

Black said she has already begun meeting with her team about possible legislation ideas that she might champion in the upcoming legislative season next year.

“I look forward to really hitting the ground running,” she said.
