Annie Annie Black “Irritating Democrats” in Legislature

by Annie Black April 12, 2021
written by Annie Black

(Annie Black) – Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist/political editor Steve Sebelius noted on Sunday our efforts to represent you despite efforts to shut me up and shut us down…

“One of the Assembly’s newest members is definitely not adhering to the rule that freshmen should be seen and not heard.  Assemblywoman Annie Black, R-Mesquite, is becoming known for floor speeches that irritate the majority Democrats. … The odds that Black will back down? Zero percent, according to her email.”

Click here to read the full column.

This is the difference between acting like you’re in the “minority” party rather than being in the “opposition” party.

Democrats have the numbers to roll over Republicans and pretty much do whatever the heck they want.  And they are.  But that doesn’t mean Republicans should go down without a fight.

And I won’t.

They “warned” me early on that if I didn’t “play the game” and “go along to get along” that the Democrats would kill my bills.  And…they did.

However, they’ve also killed just about every meaningful bill sponsored by my Republican colleagues who “played nice” with the Democrats and didn’t rock the boat.

Appeasement got them…nowhere.

Alyssa’s Story: What Javier Righetti Did to Get on Death Row

Assembly Bill 395 would abolish the death penalty in Nevada.

I’m opposed to the bill and have detailed why.  But every time I’ve attempted to talk about this issue on the floor of the Assembly, I’ve been interrupted and blocked.

But it’s not just me.  Clearly one of the reasons the Democrats have refused to fully open the Legislature to the public is to keep citizens such as Jennifer Otremba from testifying in person and make them squirm in their seats.

Ms. Otremba’s daughter was brutally murdered by one of the killers who are currently on death row in Nevada.  Here’s her tragic story…

New Video on Biden Border Crisis

While acknowledging that the growing problem of ILLEGAL immigration on our southern border is a federal issue under the control of Congress and the White House, that doesn’t mean it’s not affecting non-border states such as Nevada.

And while there’s little the Legislature can do to fix the national problem, the least we can do is not make it worse.  But that’s exactly what AB376 – which would essentially turn us into a “sanctuary state” – would do.

At the risk of again rocking the boat and irritating the Democrats, the folks at Harris Media helped me put together a short, two-minute video exposing the lies and hypocrisy that have created this disaster.

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“BREAKING: Roberta S. Jacobson, the White House’s border coordinator will resign at the end of the month amid a historic surge in migrants at the southern border.” – Buck Sexton

“So Roberta Jacobson, the ‘Border Coordinator’ is OUT and Kamala Harris, the BORDER CZAR, is MIA (missing in action).  Who is actually managing the border? This is #chaos!” – Trish Regan

“The White House will nominate two critics of the Trump administration’s border policies to lead key immigration agencies inside the Department of Homeland Security, a White House official said, as a surge of migrants at the southern border has become an early challenge for the Biden administration.” – Wall Street Journal, 4/12/21

“Kamala has been ‘in charge’ of the border over two weeks and has yet to visit.  Leadership is action.” – Rep. Lauren Boebert

Alyssa’s Story: What Javier Righetti Did to Get on Death Row

by Annie Black April 11, 2021
written by Annie Black

(Annie Black) – Assembly Bill 395 would abolish the death penalty in Nevada.

I’m opposed to the bill and have attempted to detail why.  But every time I’ve attempted to talk about this issue on the floor of the Assembly, I’ve been interrupted and blocked.

But it’s not just me.  Clearly one of the reasons the Democrats continue to refuse to open the Legislature to the public is to keep citizens such as Jennifer Otremba from testifying in person and make them squirm in their seats.

Ms. Otremba’s daughter was brutally murdered by one of the killers who are currently on death row in Nevada.  Here’s her story…

My name is Jennifer Otremba. I OPPOSE AB 395.

I’m here to tell you about my precious daughter Alyssa. She was my oldest of three girls, and my world was shattered when she was brutally murdered when she was 15 years old.

September 2, 2011 Alyssa was walking home from borrowing a textbook from a friend.  It was 6:38 pm when she texted me that she was walking home and her phone was going to die but she would be home within a half hour. Exactly 30 minutes later I texted her and there was no response. I called, and no answer.

I immediately started searching nearby parks and talking to anyone I saw to see if they had seen Alyssa. I called the police and had an officer at my home while others were patrolling and keeping a lookout for a girl fitting her description.

It was 24 hours later when her body was found approximately 300 feet behind our home in a vacant desert lot. As the details unfolded, I learned that Alyssa was within feet of the pedestrian gate at the end of our street when she was attacked by 19-year-old Javier Righetti.

He had left his home with a knife from his kitchen.  He spotted her walking and proceeded to follow her for a couple blocks before he attacked. He kidnapped her; dragging her out into the desert lot.

The uneven terrain and bushes made it so that no one could see them as he sexually assaulted her and then raped her.  He tortured her, stabbing her more than 80 times in her head, neck, body and then carved an “LV” for Las Vegas into her thigh because it made him feel “gangster.”

Just when you think it can’t get any worse, he returned hours later, and poured gasoline on her, and lit her body on fire. The coroner had to use dental records to identify her mutilated body.

During the autopsy, the tip of the knife was discovered and had broken off in her skull. Her remains were in such bad condition that we were advised not to see her because we shouldn’t remember her like that.

There are no words to adequately describe what this horrific loss has done to not only our family but the entire community. Every area of our lives were affected by the decision of this one cruel stranger. It has divided a family, created physical and mental health problems, caused unending nightmares, anxiety problems, and much, much more.

But in the midst of the ongoing struggles, we continued to cling to the belief that justice would prevail. We waited patiently for five and half years for Alyssa’s murderer to go to trial. There was justice to be served to the man that destroyed our lives.

March 16, 2017 he was found guilty and on March 21, 2017 a jury sentenced Javier Righetti to death for the gruesome murder of my daughter Alyssa. Only 8 days after the death sentence I appeared before this committee to testify on behalf of justice for my daughter.

I believe justice had finally prevailed. Although he had not killed before, at his own admission, he had sexually assaulted and raped before. Alyssa was not Javier’s first victim, but I thought she would be his last. However, in 2020, Javier stabbed another inmate putting that man on life support.

Alyssa did not deserve to be taken from this world in such a horrific way.  Her family did not deserve to have her ripped out of our lives. I cannot say the same for Javier Righetti.

He earned his punishment. He did not consider Alyssa’s life so why should his life be considered? Our family waited a long time for the justice system to work and Alyssa’s killer to be punished by what the law provides. Death is a fair sentence for what he chose to do that day.

Abolishing the death penalty would take justice away from future families of victims of the most atrocious crimes. To change the law and reduce his death sentence to life without the possibility of parole would be an insult to our system and to the jury that spent weeks of their lives sitting through the trial, listening to and having to see the horrific facts of Alyssa’s death.

Although Javier may never be executed for his crimes, he deserves to wake up every day not knowing when his time is coming. This man should not be afforded a life that my daughter Alyssa was not.

Amen.

Consider This Insanity, Compounded by Absurdity…

by Annie Black April 10, 2021
written by Annie Black

(Annie Black) – I received the following email announcement late Friday evening.  I’ve edited it slightly and replaced the name of the actual business involved with the fake name “NevadaMart.” I’ll reveal the actual name at the end.

You might want to sit down for this one…

“Now that all of the people working in NevadaMart have had an opportunity to receive a vaccine for the COVID-19 virus, we are able to begin opening the store to the public. To ensure the safety of everyone to the greatest extent possible, entry to the store will be limited.

Beginning on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, members of the public may make an online appointment through the electronic reservation system on NevadaMart’s website to shop on or after Thursday, April 15, 2021. In addition, members of the public may contact a store manager beginning Tuesday, April 13, 2021, to set up an appointment to shop in person in the store on or after Thursday, April 15, 2021.

Appointments to enter NevadaMart must be received at least 24 hours in advance. The number of people who will be able to make an appointment to shop will be limited to a specified number per store department, which will be based upon the current COVID-19 restrictions applicable at the time of shopping. In addition, each store manager will be authorized to bring in one person per day to shop in person in NevadaMart.

When a manager approves a shopping visit with the person, a store employee will enter the appointment into the electronic reservation system. Therefore, the process for making appointments will be a little different depending on the purpose for the visit to NevadaMart.

Any visitor to NevadaMart must agree to abide by certain safety protocols. First, before entering the store, each shopper must agree to submit to a free COVID-19 test. The shopper will be tested at the mobile units located in the parking lot across the street from the store.

Testing will begin at 6 a.m. each day and end at 2 p.m., except on Wednesdays when testing will continue until 6 p.m. A person may schedule an appointment for testing. Information concerning how to make an appointment for testing at this site will be posted and kept current on NevadaMart’s website.

If a shopper is fully vaccinated, the person may, in lieu of testing, present his or her vaccine information for verification. If verified, the visitor will not be required to be tested before entering the store. A stick-on pass to enter the store will be provided once a shopper has completed the COVID-19 test and has received a negative test result or has had vaccination information verified.

The pass is valid only for the day on which it is issued. Information concerning how to have vaccine information verified will be posted and kept current on NevadaMart’s website.

After receiving the pass to enter NevadaMart, the shopper may proceed directly to the front of the store or to the parking lot area immediately across from the east entrance to the store to pass through a metal detector. Once in the store, visitors must comply with all posted COVID-19 safety precautions.

In addition to the above protocols, we have been working with the Department of Health and Human Services to offer Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 Vaccination to all people in the area, including those visiting the NevadaMart. Any person can make an appointment and be vaccinated here.

These vaccinations will be provided free of charge in the mobile units across the street from the store, next to where the COVID-19 testing is provided. Beginning Monday, April 12, 2021, vaccinations will be provided on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. If an appointment is not available, be sure to check back as more appointments will open up.

We look forward to welcoming people back to NevadaMart and appreciate the cooperation everyone has shown so that we can maintain a safe environment.

Pretty stupid, right?  Now, here’s the kicker…

That announcement wasn’t for the reopening of a fictitious public retail store…

It was from Brenda Erdoes, Director of the Legislative Counsel Bureau, announcing the rules for reopening the Legislature…

The “People’s House.”

True insanity, compounded by absurdity.

Somehow I’m guessing you’re not exactly jumping for joy right now.

I know I’m not.

QUICK HITS

* Yesterday was “deadline day.”  Any bills that didn’t receive a committee hearing are now “dead.”  Not surprisingly and as expected, the Democrats killed all my bills.  But trust me, this isn’t the end!  Stay tuned.

* The Assembly passed out of committee AB351, the death-with-dignity bill, with NO recommendation.  It will now go to the full Assembly for a vote.  Because there are still a lot of unanswered questions and legitimate concerns raised by many of you, I voted “no.”  We’ll now have to see if the bill’s sponsor addresses and fixes those concerns before I cast a final vote.

* Metro officer shot on duty 10 months ago has returned to Las Vegas home.  Click here

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“We live in the freest country on planet earth. The rest of the world envies our freedoms. Meanwhile, we have a political party that is laser-focused on destroying our freedoms. It is not only shocking, but very dangerous.”

“Our Second Amendment rights are being trampled on by a man who can’t even form coherent sentences.”

“Can we dispose with this theory that Joe Biden is being controlled by the radical left and start acknowledging that Joe Biden IS the radical left?”

“This is not Obama’s third term. This is essentially Hugo Chavez’s first term.”

Update on the Assembly’s “Speech Cop”

by Annie Black April 8, 2021
written by Annie Black

(Annie Black) – Thank you for all your emails and phone calls to Democrat Majority Leader Teresa Benitez-Thompson (“TBT”) about her shutting down my floor statement last week on what death row inmate James Biela did to his victims.

I’ll give her credit.  At least she responded, even though it was canned “non-answer” answers to your concerns.  To some of you she wrote…

“Thank you for emailing. Mesquite has had some wonderful elected representatives whom I have had the pleasure of working with over a number of years. I hope your community is once again able to find an effective voice to advocate for your needs.”

Of course, I’d argue that if I wasn’t being an “effective voice” on your behalf, you wouldn’t have replaced my predecessor last year and wouldn’t be writing her in the first place.  You’d be in the dark about what they’re doing…which is exactly as they’d prefer.

TBT also wrote to others…

“Conservative Republicans give speeches daily in the Nevada legislature, and participate in floor debates. I believe many of them are very effective in ensuring their values are voiced.”

The thing about this is that many, if not most, of such speeches aren’t addressing issues the Democrat majority doesn’t agree with.  Many are simply “feel good” speeches.  I try not to waste our strictly limited time like that and try to keep my remarks focused on more important business.

The bottom line is that TBT should not be acting as the “speech police” and only allowing remarks SHE thinks are “effective in ensuring” your values are being voiced.  That’s for YOU to decide.

Some Quick Hits and Other Updates

* I attempted to have your comments on the “death with dignity” bill, as detailed in the last AnnieGram, officially submitted on the record.  The committee chair hearing the bill, Assemblywoman Rochelle Nguyen, refused to accept them.

These folks have a REAL problem hearing opinions that don’t agree with theirs.

* AB376 would essentially make Nevada a “sanctuary state” for illegal immigration.  As reported by Michelle Rindels:

“Assemblywoman Annie Black (R-Mesquite) pointed to a news article about the arrest of two Yemeni men apprehended by the Border Patrol who had been on a terror watch list and asked if the bill would prevent local police from helping bring them into custody.”

The bill’s sponsor, Assemblywoman Selena Torres (D-Las Vegas), replied that local authorities would still be able to detain someone “if there is a federal warrant” out for them.

Not near good enough.  People who sneak into the country illegally don’t necessarily have a “federal warrant” out for them.  We don’t even know they’re here.

It’s only after they’ve been picked up for non-federal offenses that we find out they’re in our country illegally.  At that point, they should be turned over to ICE for processing.

* AB334 would raise fees on developers to pay for “affordable housing.”  My response, as reported by News3 Las Vegas and the Nevada Independent…

“If we need teachers, we don’t make it harder to become a teacher. If we need doctors, we don’t make it harder to become a doctor, we make it easier.  The answer is to reduce fees, to reduce restrictions, reduce red tape and make it easier for them to build, not make it harder for them to build.”

* Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro said this week that she’s still “working on the logistics” on reopening the Legislature to the public.  What a crock.

If casinos, restaurants, bars, WalMarts, grocery stores, drug stores and schools have already found “logistical” ways to open their doors, there’s NO REASON the Legislature can’t do so immediately as well.

The Democrats simply don’t want you to be able to come into the building and see what they’re doing.

From the AnnieGram Mailbag

“Do you know, I have sent numerous messages to assemblymen/women and you are the only one who consistently replies!  I will do all I can to support you.” – Nancy Carlson

“I just want you to know how refreshing it is to hear from a state representative and one with common sense.  We don’t live in your district but I just wish we had someone in our district who is so thoughtful and concerned as you seem to be.  We live in Las Vegas and haven’t heard from our representative, much less asked for our opinion on any proposed legislation. Thank you for your service to our state.” – Patrick McGehee

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“Lawmaker admits all gov’t efforts to solve the ‘affordable housing crisis’ have failed, proposes *new* gov’t solutions? Get government out of the way!  Lower taxes, lower regs, & OPEN NEVADA!  That’s how you increase the housing supply. It’s not rocket science.” – Daniel Honchariw, Nevada Policy Research Institut

Here’s What YOU Have Said on the Assisted Suicide Bill

by Annie Black April 6, 2021
written by Annie Black

(Annie Black) – You guys are…THE BEST!

When I asked for your advice on a really tough bill – Assembly Bill 351 – to help me decide how to vote on it, you came through like a champ.

I’ve received, literally, hundreds of emails over the last 24 hours on this issue from all around the state expressing strong opinions on both sides of the issue.  No other bill I’ve faced so far has gotten anywhere near this much feedback.

THANK YOU!

A hearing on AB351 is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.  Your responses will help me ask important and tough questions of the bill sponsor that deserve to be addressed.  As they say, “the devil’s in the details.”

I know this is a difficult and emotional issue.  And I want to thank you for sharing so many of your personal stories and experiences – many so painful they made me choke up.

When I originally suggested this bill was “gut-wrenching,” I truly didn’t fully appreciate just HOW gut-wrenching it was to so many people.

Since this is obviously such an important and controversial bill for so many, I decided to publish just a SMALL representative sampling of the responses I received.  Not to try to change anyone’s mind, but to show the depth and variety of opinion out there.

Your responses have been EXTREMELY helpful in guiding me on this decision.  You raised a number of issues I hadn’t thought about.  And I think everyone will benefit from reading these as much as I have.

Again…THANK YOU!  You’re my heroes.

Annie

From the AnnieGram Mailbag

“As you say Annie, no matter what you do, some are going to say you were wrong. This is one where you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t.  But please understand young lady, no matter what your decision, you are certainly not losing my encouragement and support.” – David Brandt

“You will not lose my support if you vote for this bill but I will be disappointed that you could support a bill that gives ‘men’ the ability to determine if someone has the right to end their life. The story you shared is sad but it did not compel me to feel she has the right to end her life before the time has come. It is not our right to play God even if many Doctors feel that they are.” – Tina Campbell

“How to vote on this bill is very difficult and however you vote you will not lose my support. I am looking at it from a religious point of view and don’t think the Lord would be in favor of such a bill. I have always been taught that things like death are done on the Lord’s time and not ours. … I know that whatever decision you make it will be what you believe and even though I may not agree with you I am still with you.  I wish there were a lot more in Carson City like you keep up the good work.” – Rich Carlson

“I am deeply grateful that you raised the issue of AB 351 in your email letter and on Facebook. While my Christian faith tells me it is God who must decide when our ‘time has come,’ I also believe – in this specific matter – that the state cannot stand in the place of Deity. This must be, and should be, a decision made between a patient and their physician. Please know that whatever you decide and however you vote, my support for you and your good work on our behalf will not change. You’re our champion in Carson City, and I am grateful for everything you’re doing!” – Mark K.

“Whether it is abortion, infanticide, or it is doctor assisted suicide, it is still murder. Suicide is self-murder, and the person involved is helping with the murder. The bill will also be changed in the future for euthanasia.  This is just the first step.” – Robert D Young Sr

“A person who is terminally ill does not have a moral or legal right to be killed. I would strongly recommend a NO VOTE.” – Hugh & Mary Tebault

“Annie, I know this is difficult. But to take someone’s life is wrong.  We have lived this story with a 22-year-old daughter who struggled 4 years with cancer.  But only God determines our end of life.  Otherwise, it is just plain murder!  Perhaps people would say ‘but it is humane murder’!  No such thing.  Our lives are in God’s hands.  When we decide we know better we have truly proceeded down the slippery slope.  Where does it end???” – Dorothy Mcdonald

“As a Christian, and an American disabled person, living with primary progressive multiple sclerosis, my future is unknown. But I can assure you, I will endure whatever the good Lord intends for me. … This is a very slippery slope. We are a Christian-founded country, and suicide is an abomination unto the Lord. No.” – Julia Barron

“We will hear many heart wrenching stories to get our hearts broken for the suffering of some. I do not deny their horrific pain, however I don’t think passing a bill to legalize suicide is the answer. It’s a slippery slope. In Nazi Germany they started with the mentally handicapped, then went with physically handicapped.” – Barbara Decker

“I have to say Annie I’m angry that this is even a bill. God is who we must answer to no matter the end for each of us. He has said murder is wrong. God even wrote it on a tablet of stone. You or I or the Swamp in Nevada cannot pretend this is morally right. … Mostly I write this email to say I’m sorry you are asked to vote on such a bill that will make you look heartless if you don’t vote for it.” – Ivona Magoon

“The question you ask is a simple yet difficult one. The answer is simple. Human life is invaluable. Why is murder illegal? Why is suicide illegal? Both have the same answer: human life is different from every other life on the planet. We are created to rule the earth alongside God not to be ruled by man. Each and every life has infinite worth. No other human has the right to replace God as director or determine when it should end.” – Sheila Rhinehart

“Not a tough one.  Only God can give and take life!  It’s a hard decision for loved ones watching a loved one suffer.  However, if you vote for this you are opening the floodgates for disrespect for life.  What comes next!  Stand tough.  Vote no!  Next thing you know some basement dwelling 20-30 something will want to exterminate old people because we have outlived our usefulness.  God will tell us when it’s time to go.  Not the state.  Keep the sick comfortable and let them go naturally.  Not a hard decision!” – Larry Wilkinson

“Please vote NO on Euthanasia!!!   No human being should ever even consider playing GOD.  I don’t want to see anyone suffer in agonizing pain, but in this day and age there is no need for anyone to endure that. It has been my experience, with my parents and others, that when someone is very SINCERE in wanting to die, that the Lord will take them within 5 days. Thank you for allowing your constituents to express their opinions.” – Janell Cooper

“God never promised us life would be easy and we all have had our share of suffering and pain.  However, WE are not the ones who makes the decision when someone lives or when someone dies.  It is GOD’S decision and to take our own lives is a horrendous sin against His teachings. I certainly hope and pray that you will not make the decision to ‘usurp’ that authority from God.” – AJ Maimbourg

“When tough questions like this come up, I ask: “What would Jesus Christ do?  Or say.  The taking of life is considered an extremely bad sin – and I know of no exceptions to that rule from God.  It is God’s decision when we could die or live.” – Rick Kuhlmey

“Having read the bill and Hannah’s story, I would ask Hannah if she believes or has faith in God? If she is a believer, she should read and reflect on Job. God has plans for all of us. It is his will not ours to decide when it’s time for us to pass.” – Royce Studebaker

“Yes, this is a no win; however, I say NO! Anything that takes life, whether it is abortion or elective death, it is not right. I understand the suffering of people leading to death, however, are we as a people really going to play God.  I will not play God. It has to be God’s timing not man’s. Thank you for listening Annie, this is difficult at best and I’m praying for you.” – Steve Phillips

“This is a tough issue indeed. As a Christian I am bound by the Word of God. As someone who believes God is the only authorized giver and taker of life, I cannot support any legislation that puts that choice in the hands of another – even the person themselves. No judgement, no condemnation from me. I do not envy your position, but I thank you for choosing to be so invested in the position given to you.” – Julianne King

“Do you have a biblical world view where you believe God is the creator and sovereign ruler of all people? He determines when life begins, at conception, and when life ends.  All our days were ordained before any came to pass. He alone determines when our lives are over. … I do not believe we have the right to say when it’s over and cut short our life because it’s too hard. I, as you can tell, am a Christian and my views are based on what God’s word says. He hasn’t let me down yet and I trust He will lead you and guide you in your decision if you ask for His wisdom. Thanks for listening Annie. I appreciate your reaching out to us.” – Denise Peck

“When you are a Christian, there are no pros and cons to a bill like this.  There are only cons. – just like with the abortion issue.  I can’t imagine the pain some people have to endure before they die, but it’s all in God’s hands and at all times.  As a country we cannot take over HIS place and determine when someone should die – or not.” – Gail Warthen

“I believe the legalization of assisted suicide is a bad idea. Not only are prognoses for terminal diseases often wrong, but assisted suicide is also one step closer to involuntary euthanasia. It allows vulnerable patients to feel pressured into giving up.” – Peter Scougale

“Personally, Jim and I object to this bill regardless of how it’s written and emotional stories like the one from Hannah. It is still murder.  You’re taking a life whether it be humanely or inhumanely.  It’s OK to euthanize animals; it’s not OK to euthanize people. Life is God-given and God-removed, not by man.” – Jim & Patti Jones

“God is the author and perfecter of our faith. It is God’s decision when someone dies or not. The grandmother in Las Vegas may still be waiting to accept Christ her savior and be admitted into heaven. As soon as she does, HE could allow her to die. Thank you for asking for my opinion. You are one of a kind, dear.” – Marie

“Respectfully, you know that we are not God.  Please do NOT vote in favor of this bill. … I will pray for your wisdom and so appreciate your reaching out to your constituents and us ‘adoptees.’ On your team.” – Jo Belmont

“This is definitely a tough issue on several levels.  No one wants to cause dying people more pain, but I do not believe that government intrusion by way of this bill is right.  Allowing self-suicide can eliminate the possibility of God’s Healing and the possibility of elder abuse and fraud is opened up, no matter how many ‘safe guards’ they try to put in place.  As a Christian, I know that God’s Word does not condone killing of one’s self or others.  I would encourage you to vote No on this bill.” – Darla A. Lee

“As a conservative Christian, I cannot go against the Bible.  God gives us life.  Our end should be in His time, not ours.  I have lost all my family to cancer, they suffered terribly but it does not make it right to end life. Thank you for asking your constituents.” – Kathyrn Goecke

“I am a conservative Christian. In 2010 I had Leukemia, 5 brain bleeds, kidneys shut down, liver almost failed, and a mass in my colon. Prognosis 10-20% chance to live. I did survive and was cured of all.  Only by The Grace of Elohim do I live. … I believe there are circumstances that warrant a person to want to end their life. I don’t believe it is an unpardonable sin. Elohim promises everlasting life not temporary life.” – Allen Carver

“I don’t want to see this person suffer; however, that is not a reason to stop living. How would any of them feel if the day after they ‘allowed a physician to prescribe a medication that is designed to end the life of a patient under certain circumstance’ there was a CURE for that person’s ailment? … I recommend you vote against this in the interest of compassion and look for alternatives to these kinds of choices. Thanks for listening.” – Janice Hermsen

“For those that object on religious or moral grounds I say the same thing I said about legal bothels: ‘If they offend you, do not use them.’ If your religion tells you it is wrong, then do not force me to obey your beliefs.” – Dan Schinhofen

“Someone who is suffering can just put a gun to their heads or jump in front of a truck. Let them die with dignity. If I wanted to die, I would find a way to die.  HOW I die is up to the people considering this bill.” – Ronald Bloom

“My fear is that the bill could be used in a harmful way on people not suffering as the lady you describe. It’s a difficult call but I would vote no.  I appreciate you taking the time to listen to the People.” – Janet Lochman

“My concern with any end-of-life legislation is that if passed who makes the decision to end the life? Is it the potential decedent? Is it a relative or caregiver? Is it a physician, or worse, some governing official or committee? Who decides if that life is not ‘worth’ prolonging? … I don’t envy your position. The question forces a boatload of hard religious, moral and ethical questions be answered.” – Alan Bond

“Annie, I’m against the death pill because I don’t trust the government, and feel it might interfere in life/death decisions.” – Yvonne Sweeten

“The slope from legalizing assisted suicide it too short and too slippery to keep it from turning into suicide encouragement, and after that to physicians ordering people killed because it costs too much to keep them alive, and then to government bureaucrats deciding who dies today. …  That is the slope assisted suicide can too easily lead to: where government bureaucrats decide who lives and who dies.  They should not get to play God, no matter how much they want to! … I am really impressed that you are soliciting opinions on the subject! – Randy Mackie

“In regards to the story of this poor sick woman please vote to let her die of her own free will.  This woman can think for herself. She is not an unborn baby. There is a difference. This woman wants to die because she knows there is no hope. But an unborn baby didn’t ask to be conceived. All unborn babies deserve to live.  There is hope and a future for them!” – Cheri Varriano

“US Constitution, nor the Nevada Constitution, has enumerated power given to legislate between a doctor and a patient. Limited government means limited government.  Tempt not the government to play God.” – Richard Westrup

“If I want to die, where in the Constitution does it give the government power over my personal decisions as long as I’m not hurting anyone else?  This matter is a moral question. Government cannot dictate morality.  Unlike the moral question of abortion, government has a duty to protect the innocent, those who can’t protect themselves.  The right to die must be left up to the individual who is capable of making an informed decision.” – Kerry Noble

“When medical science has no solution; when our faith, to which we are most faithful, does not respond in that situation, then we are left to do act humanely, mercifully and kindly to those we care about, who have no further hope. However, I would never put that much authority in the hands of one doctor. I would suggest a process that…would include a signed end-of-life statement request on the part of the closest available relative, two physicians who are specialists or practitioners in that field of medicine, including the attending physician, plus a sealed signature of county or district judge.” – Pastor Darrell C. Porter

“I am concerned that giving a physician leeway to provide life-ending drugs, or other interventions, may result in a doctor eventually being required on pain of law to prescribe such even if his religious or other personal belief system rejects such an action. The implications are frightening.” – Ellen Pearson

“In short, I believe in the power of people to make the best decisions for themselves. I am a strong Christian, and my wife threatens me that to agree to ‘assisted suicide’ is not our place, but God’s will. I don’t know that I agree with that.  That said, there must be very tight controls, so that medically challenged, terminally ill people, are not sort of talked into making this decision.” – Fred Andersen

“If a terminally ill person chooses to end their life due to pain, family burden, financial burden, fear of implanting an unforgettable vision in the eyes of a child or loved one, so be it.  The government needs to stop thinking they know what is best for us.  They act like we can’t make a decision or even survive without their vast knowledge of life and how it should be conducted.  Leave people alone.  Let them make their own decisions about the life that was God given.” – George Creamer

“At this point in my life, I would support the bill. But it needs to be closely monitored so it is not taken advantage of.  I never want to get to a point where the government can step in and tell doctors who to give a pill to.” – Beverly Muniz

“Even though I find myself conflicted on this issue, as a pro-life conservative, I would support this bill.  However, I would only support such a measure providing the inclusion of specific safeguards and requite language to protect all parties that would be impacted by such a measure.” – Tim Fasano

“The sticky part for me is the thought of it being abused by doctors who don’t actually see patients and have an agenda, perhaps. The ‘certain circumstances’ would need to be addressed by a medical ethics committee, and I would assume this has happened before the drafting of the bill.” – Denise Vaughn

“No doctor should be made to go against his consciousness or religion. More than one family member must go along with it.  I would not want to see a bill that left it too open-ended so that government could then make the decisions.” – Bobbie Green

“The Hippocratic Oath says do no harm.  I consider pumping drugs and forcing tubes when there is no further hope…harm. There comes a time when you have to be able to say no more. A person deserves the right to leave this world with a modicum of respect. I just can’t put it any more succinctly as that.” – Troy La Mana

“My personal belief is that the power of life and death belong to God and God alone.  But my question would be: if we make it legal based on this woman’s case, where could it lead?  What kind of damage would it do in society?  Who else would these kinds of decisions be extended to?  And what kind of doors might it open?” – Stacey Rauh

“I do not think it is a tough decision to make. We humans treat our animals better than humans. No one should have to suffer at the end of life. My vote is YES.” – Ray Miller

“I am pro-life, period. But there is a difference between being anti-abortion and pro-life.  A child in the mother’s womb cannot make decisions like Hanna Olivas can. She is very aware of her condition. She is very aware of her family. And more importantly, she is suffering. At some point, Hanna should have the right to resolve her illness, her pain, and her suffering, on her own terms. The unborn do not have that same opportunity!” – Jerry Littman

“I think it should be up to the person in pain and their God to make that choice. We have no problem putting a sick or injured animal down because we don’t like to see them suffer in pain. Do we care more for animals than we do for humans life?  You have a very hard choice, Annie.  Whatever you decide I will support. Keep up the fight.” – Robert Gaudet

“I am a Christian and a Republican.   My opinion regarding Bill351 is it should be passed.  As a society we are kind to our beloved pets and do not wish them to suffer, thus we make the decision to ‘put our pets down’ when they are in pain or suffering. By no means am I stating humans are animals, but why shouldn’t an individual be able to make the same decision as to their life?  Only that person, along with their physician, should have the ability and the right to decide when to terminate a life. This is most definitely not a decision the government should be making for the individual.” – Robin Arndt

“We are humane with our pets and put them down so they don’t suffer when they don’t have a voice to speak up.  How much more so should a human who has great reasoning capabilities be able to make their own personal choice. Thank you for taking up this difficult issue and asking your constituents their opinions on such an important issue.” – Tammy Schinhofen

“I was born and raised Catholic.  To take your own life or that of another is a Mortal Sin.  This is one of the principles of the Catholic religion that I have never agreed with! It is a person’s own right to determine when or if they want to continue the course of their life as it may be when there are no alternatives to the impending eventual end of their existence! … You have a tough decision to make and I appreciate the opportunity to express my feelings! So far your actions to your job for the people of this state are commendable and I will continue to support you!” – Jim Ferrara

“I am a Christian and I realize It might be a moral/mortal question of conscience.  But I would never judge anyone who allowed their suffering loved one to sleep more deeply, more quickly.” – Mary Krevosh

“For me, this is basically a type euthanasia bill for the terminally ill.  It gives the terminally ill a choice to relieve suffering and to me that is what our great country is all about…CHOICES.  As a society, we do not hesitate to alleviate the pain of animals, why should we not be able to choose the same for ourselves? I do not envy the bind you are in with this bill; yet the integrity you demonstrate by asking Nevadans says more about you than you realize.” – Reva Crump

“Although I am a conservative Lutheran, I believe in certain situations, as you mentioned, it is the right and humane decision. If an individual has no hope, let them die when they are ready. Thanks for making the tough decisions and fighting for us forgotten conservatives in North Las Vegas.” – Brian Ferry

“I am a Catholic, but I believe in the free will God has given us. This is not to say I give up my life lightly, and I know Jesus suffered for all of our sins, but he did not suffer for our bodies to be corrupt (disintegrate).  Therefore, I encourage you to vote yes on AB351.  Thank you for letting me voice my opinion.” – Claudia Fisher

“As a pro-lifer, I have to separate myself on this one.  If it were me in this circumstance, I would want the right to say my time here is done, spare my family & friends this horrible end of life.  Let me leave in peace.  I’m a yes vote.” – Lee Price

“I am Catholic and don’t believe in suicide. That said, I also believe in a person’s choice, especially a seriously ill terminal patient, in serious constant pain.  This bill will leave the decision up to the Doctor and the Patient. I would vote for the bill.” – Tom Tighe

“I have a hard time with conservatives using the Bible to make laws. We are supposed to separate Church and State. I guess I am more of a Libertarian and want small government. Government should not be making decisions about our choices of who we can marry, and what we can do with our bodies. This is the overreach of the government. Government needs to stick to defending the Constitution, and staying small.” – Jennifer Arton

“I support this legislation. The framework I use for assessing tough questions like this is one of Freedom. Which approach results in greater human freedom, greater liberty and control over our own lives? To be prevented by law from managing one’s own end of life on one’s own terms is the antithesis of freedom. … I am not swayed here by appeals to the immorality of ending one’s own life. Legality and morality are separate, and ought not to necessarily align.  It is perfectly fine if a church or belief system wishes to prohibit its members from utilizing the freedom enabled by such legislation.” – Ben Hadden

“I personally had to deal with a suicide in our family. I was the one that found the family member. We had no idea that she would have ever done what she did. These issues are hard to deal with, but if someone wants to check out, then they should have the options to do so without doing it how my family member did it.” – Dalene Hayes

“I acknowledge the tough spot you’re in with this bill.  I support physician assisted, compassionate end of life care. No human should have to exit their life in unbearable pain and suffering. If you vote yes for this bill, you have my support. And if you feel you must vote no, I understand.” – Mary Loftus

“It is a slippery slope. A doctor assisted suicide can be justified in some ways. There are many factors to consider. Does the practice have the consent of the patient?  How difficult will it be to erode the proffered safeguards? Treading on thin ice and dangerous ground!” – John McCormick

“This is a tough issue, and one that many people will not agree upon. I do believe however, even if one person doesn’t agree with it, it is not their responsibility to make laws or mandates to require other people follow in their beliefs. In my opinion this is a personal issue that individuals need to make with their families, their doctors and their religious belief systems.  It is not something that the government should impose their will upon. … The less the government is able to dictate what occurs in our personal lives, medical decisions, etc., the better.” – Carissa Brucato

“Personally, I lean toward allowing someone their choice to choose to die as they choose so long as it’s their choice and not the doctor, hospital or other ‘not family’ who may have other motives besides the patient to push for end of life. … The bottom line is: hospitals are a business. Ending one’s life shouldn’t be a business decision but one based on the best interest of the patient.” – Robert Zuccaro

“I worked in medicine for 35 years, my entire career.  There never has been nor will there ever be consensus on this issue.  It is deeply personal.  The other issue I might add is that many people leave their families bankrupted when they die these agonizing deaths.  Make no mistake, I swing far right and consider myself a religious woman, but I do not believe this is a choice that anyone should make except the person suffering and the physician caring for that person.” – Valerie Fiannaca

“I read your email on SB351 with pride and respect for you. How refreshing to be consulted on an issue/bill for true input. I too struggle with this issue but have watched friends, family and colleagues struggle with terminal illnesses, some of which were horrible to witness. I can only come to the conclusion that we should be in charge of our own health decisions in every aspect. To that end, we should have the right to die in dignity. I hope you vote ‘YES’ on this bill but I will respect whatever your decision will be.” – Laurie Agnew

“Thank you so much for reaching out for input on this difficult decision. I am impressed with your dedication to your constituents and those of us, like me, who are not. … I have to say that people should be able to make their own decision about whether or not to end their life. Of course, with safeguards in place such as a doctor saying the person is terminal.” – Michael MacLean

“No doubt this is a very difficult situation and I appreciate you reaching out to fellow Nevadans for opinions.  I am in favor of this, as I know of at least one person that was diagnosed with terminal cancer that committed suicide.  Maybe had they had this alternative it would’ve been looked at a bit different than them putting a gun to their head.  Thank you for allowing Nevadans to have a voice in your decision.  In my 63 years as a resident, you are the first politician I have known to allow my voice to be heard. I can’t thank you enough!” – Gaylen E. Christean

“The bill is not perfect.  Despite what I see as imperfections, the bill is a step in the right direction, and I would like to see it approved. … When the time comes that that line takes me below the point where I can have a chance at a decent quality of life, I don’t want the government to make that decision for me.  With the consultation of my doctors, I want to be the one who has the right to make that decision.” – Roger Talley

“So long as the subject can give informed consent, it is the humane approach to allow them freedom from what can be extended and excruciating pain with no reasonable hope of recovery. … When disease or a serious accident has an overwhelming effect on someone’s quality of life, the individual should have the ability to end their suffering after consulting with medical personnel sufficiently trained to wisely counsel the afflicted person.” – Fred Voltz

“It’s not about not fighting till your cured. It’s about fighting until you have no other options when your body and soul has given its best shot of surviving but can’t continue that fight any longer. Why wouldn’t you want to make sure that friend or family member could end the fight on their own terms.” – Terry Ferree

“I believe this is something that every individual should be able to decide for themselves. I don’t believe that any government official or medical professional can dictate whether I have to suffer or not. That decision should be mine, period. Allowing a person with absolutely no chance of a future to leave this world on their terms, is not a sin, it is mercy.”- Lorraine Rush

“First of all, I love the way you reach out to us and ask us for our opinion. You are the BEST!  I believe in AB351 – a person should be allowed to end their life with dignity – not in wrenching pain and suffering. We do this much for our beloved pets – we should not do any less for human beings.” – Bev Stenehjem

“Thank you for reaching out for people’s input. I feel that there should be an option to end your own life. It needs to be managed so doctors or bureaucrats cannot randomly end people’s life without consent of the patient.” – Craig Bordin

“Frank and I both believe that you should vote for it.  However, it must clearly be the patient’s choice with no arm-twisting by relatives. The patient, doctor and closest living relative(s) must be in agreement.  There will always be a chance of abuse of the law, so safeguards would need to be built into the law. Thank you for asking for our opinions. How refreshing!!” – Linda and Frank Shannon

“You are in a tough spot, but so are all the other legislators.  I believe most of your followers will respect however you vote.  A vote for it is a vote for individual rights.  A vote against the bill is again stripping us of our individual freedoms.” – Karen Miskimins

“First of all, thank you for allowing us (your supporters) to at least give our thoughts, in real time, to this almost impossible voting decision that’s been placed on you. There is no short, knee jerk reaction or encyclopedic answer to be given that would satisfy any of us. … Regardless of your decision, whatever you decide, you certainly have my support either way. You’re doing a great job, freshman or not.  Stir things up and take no prisoners!” – Larry Goudie

“Thank you for a asking my opinion on AB351. I wish ALL legislators were like you. Without knowing everything about this bill, I do support mercy for a terminal patient – with their consent – in horrible pain. Again, thank you for asking our opinion.” – Craig McCormick

“Thank you for inviting comment from your constituents on AB 351. You are the first representative who has ever asked my opinion on any pending legislation. I read through the bill and decided I would approve of its passage. My basic position is that competent adults should be given as much liberty as possible to make choices for themselves, as long as those choices do not result in harm or injury to others or intrude on the rights of others.” – Marcus Jensen

“It’s really a tough issue. However, I believe in your leadership on this issue and will support you whichever way you end up voting. I think you are correct on your analysis of this – you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. I’ll back you whatever you do.” – Ron Pitcher

“I would urge you to support this bill. I assure you that you will not lose my support regardless of how you decide to vote. I appreciate your careful consideration of this issue and for all of the hard work you do for us.” – Dave Graham

“As difficult as this is for you, and I know you are struggling with the decision on how to vote, if it was me, I would vote no.  I respect your asking your constituents, and I will surely pray for you to make the best decision.  And I will not be angry at whatever your decision.” – Jeannette Wiley

“I am one of your ‘orphans’ from Sparks, NV. Though I am a conservative, I have to say, I personally would vote positively for this bill. I believe it is anyone’s right to do what they felt was best for themself, and if the argument is a theological one, well my understanding is church and state are separate. … Just my two cents. Thank you for asking for opinions. We believe in you, Annie! Which is more than I can say for most of our representatives.” – Rylee W.

“Thanks for reaching out for comments and asking Nevadans to help with your decision on how to voter for Assembly Bill 351.  It’s refreshing and hope you continue to ask as you have.  Please vote no.  Thank you so much for asking for responses and for listening.” – Sandi Covert

“I recently read your post pertaining to AB 351 and, to start, I have a great appreciation and respect of how you utilize social media to gauge how your constituents feel about legislative issues. More elected officials could learn much from you. … Thank you again for soliciting the opinions of your constituents regarding this legislation. I feel I can speak for both my wife and I when I say we are thankful to have you representing us and our interests in Carson City.” – Chris Young

“Thank you for reaching out to us and asking for our opinion. This means a lot and is appreciated!  I believe a person should be allowed to end their life with dignity and not in unimaginable pain. The poor suffering women from Las Vegas said she does not want her family to remember her like that. I agree. I support AB351 and I hope you will too!” – Susan DeCamp

“First I want/need to express my profound appreciation of your concern for the citizens of Nevada.  To actually reach out and ask what we think/feel regarding those issues that matter to us.  In all honesty I really need to read the bill in order to provide informed feedback. However, having said that…I personally would want the ability to choose.” – George A. Cassity

“Hello Annie, first allow me to say thank you and how impressed I am with you, young lady, and how proud I am to be one of your ‘orphans.’ As things in life change, people change also. As I grow older, I find myself contemplating things in a manner I swore I never would. Such as this item. This discussion is between the individual, his or her family and their God.” – Victor Kessler

“Thank you for representing all Nevadans even though we may not be in your district.  It is nice to know how much you care about us. … You are right.  Not everyone is going to agree with what you decide and you may lose some supporters.  At least they cannot say you took the matter lightly.  If you lose supporters because of this one issue, they probably were not really your supporters to begin with.” – Sandra Jennings

“Good luck, girl. I don’t envy you your position or final disposition on this issue but my support is NOT in question. Your decision, on this & every issue, is and always WILL be, the one that allows you to sleep at night and look at yourself in the mirror in the morning & say ‘I’ve done nothing to be ashamed of; I did my best.’” – Richard Hartley

“Thank you for giving Nevadans a voice and for personalizing that experience. It’s such a privilege to be able to respond to a live human being that actually has our best interests in mind. Thank you so much for that.” – Christine Pasciuti

Asking for Your Advice on a REALLY Tough Issue

by Annie Black April 5, 2021
written by Annie Black

(Annie Black) – Assembly Bill 351 would allow “a physician to prescribe a medication that is designed to end the life of a patient under certain circumstances.”

This is one of those bills where conservatives of good conscience disagree.  It’s a tough one.  Any bill related, literally, to life-and-death decisions – from abortion to capital punishment – are gut-wrenching.

In considering the merits of this bill, I found an op-ed by Hanna Olivas, which was published Saturday in the Las Vegas Sun, to be emotionally persuasive.

Hannah, a 46-year-old mother and grandmother living in Las Vegas, has “an aggressive, incurable and terminal cancer.”  The pain and suffering she’s facing is unimaginable. Consider her story…

“For now, I continue to undergo different types of treatments to have a better quality of life.  But the blood cancer is taking a toll on my body.  I am tired. I am in pain. I have a lesion in my neck. … I am exhausted, mentally and physically. I am nauseated. I am vomiting and I am in pain. …

“I know that my spinal column will collapse and shoot unbearable pain throughout my body, including my skull, jaw, teeth, ribs and legs. I am terrified of blood clots, bone cracks from just lying in bed in hospice, as tumors grow throughout my body. I do not want to leave my family with those horrific images as I die slowly in unbearable pain.”

I know there are principled conservatives who object to this bill.  And I realize no matter how I vote on it I’m going to make some people angry and will likely lose their support.

But this is a decision I can’t duck.  Yes, it’s hard.  But that’s what I was elected to do on your behalf.

So before I make my decision, I want to hear from you.  Give me your pros and cons.  Tell me why you think I should vote for it or vote against it.  And I’ll use your feedback to help me make the best choice possible.

OK, It’s REALLY Starting to Get Ugly Now!

by Annie Black April 2, 2021
written by Annie Black

(Annie Black) – The Democrat majority in the State Assembly has been screwing with me since Day One of this session, often over trivial matters and “rules” they arbitrarily enforce.

On the first day of session, Democrat Majority Leader Teresa Benitez-Thompson (a.k.a., “TBT”) sent word through a surrogate that I wasn’t allowed to wear a “Nevada” coat I’d purchased in the Legislature gift shop even though the “rules” say nothing about any kind of “dress code.”

Then there was the time when I referred to the “Biden Border Crisis” in a floor statement.  I was told I couldn’t mention Mr. Biden by name, even though the “rules” only say I can’t mention another “member” by name.

These efforts to harass and shut me up got more serious when I made a motion to reopen the building to the public a couple weeks ago.  TBT objected and the Speaker Pro Tem, Assemblyman Steve Yeager, simply ignored the “rules” and ignored my motion.

Then the Democrat leadership tried to kill my bill to end the governor’s “Declaration of Emergency” (ACR2) by refusing to refer it to a committee.

Under pressure from many of you (thanks!), they finally released the bill from the Chief Clerk’s desk and assigned it to the Legislative Operations Committee.  However, committee Chair Brittney Miller has thus far refused to schedule a hearing on it.

Then earlier this week when I placed a desktop podium on my desk to help me organize my floor statements better, I was ordered to remove it.  I was told it broke some “rule.”  But once again no one could show me any such rule (because there isn’t one).

But today things got REALLY ugly.  And I’m…um, well…the word rhymes with “kissed.”

On the floor of the Assembly I began to read a prepared statement detailing what a particular death row inmate did to deserve the death penalty.  I had barely begun my remarks when TBT cut me off, claiming – here we go again – that I was breaking some “rule.”

And Speaker Jason Frierson agreed with her.

You can watch the very short video clip by clicking here

After the floor session, TBT came to my office to scold me directly.  I asked her what specific rule I’d supposedly broken.  She responded that I wasn’t allowed to speak on the floor of the Assembly about specific bills.

Here’s the problem: I DIDN’T!

I spoke about this issue in general.  I did NOT mention either of the two anti-death penalty bills currently being debated in committee.  Here’s the full text of the prepared statement TBT blocked me from making…

Mr. Speaker,

I rise today in opposition to efforts to abolish the death penalty here in Nevada.

On January 20th, 2008, a college student named Brianna Denison was kidnapped, raped and brutally murdered by James Biela, who is currently on Nevada’s death row.

Her murder was committed just two months after Biela brutally raped at gunpoint another college student, Amanda Collins, in a UNR parking garage.

Miss Denison’s body, clothed only in socks, was found weeks after the murder in a snow-covered field near a Reno business park under a discarded Christmas tree.  She had been smothered with a pillow until she choked, raped, and ultimately strangled to death.

DNA evidence conclusively proved James Biela was Miss Denison’s killer.  He was arrested, tried, convicted and sentenced to death by a jury.

Bri was only 19 years old, with her entire life ahead of her.  But James Biela gave her the death penalty.  He should get the same.  And the sooner the better.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

NO MENTION OF ANY SPECIFIC BILLS!

I can understand why TBT and other Democrats didn’t want you to hear this.  They want you to think the death penalty is “cruel” without knowing what cruel, heinous murders the killers committed to land on death row in the first place.

It completely screws up the Killer Coddlers’ narrative.

But this isn’t even about the death penalty.  This is about Democrat leaders trying to silence any legislator who doesn’t agree with them.  They expect us to just sit in the corner like a potted plant and keep our mouths shut.

Sorry, but NOBODY puts Annie in a corner!  (Hat tip to “Dirty Dancing”)

Beat me on a vote, fine.  You have the numbers.  I accept that.

But trying to SILENCE me by using “rules” they’re making up as they go along is not fine.  It’s outrageous.

And here’s the thing: They’re not just silencing me.  They’re silencing YOU, the people I was elected to represent in the Legislature.

Look, I know I’m new.  As such, it’s certainly possible – likely even – that I could make a “rookie” mistake and unknowingly break some arcane process “rule” without knowing it.  If so, I’ll learn from the mistake and not make it again.

But that’s NOT what we’re talking about here.

I didn’t break any of their precious “rules” with my floor statement about how Ms. Denison was murdered.  I was simply exercising my First Amendment right to speak on an important issue on behalf of my constituents (including my “adopted” ones).

The Democrat majority can keep trying to shut me up.  They can keep harassing me.  They can keep trying to bully me.

But I will NOT go gentle into that good night.  And I’ve had enough of this…um, well…the word rhymes with “clap.”

What?  You want to know how to reach Majority Leader Benitez-Thompson and ask her to stop trying to block speech she doesn’t like?  I think I can help you out there…

A Special Message of Apology to My “Adopted” Constituents

by Annie Black April 1, 2021

(Annie Black) – I know John Wayne said, “Never apologize, it’s a sign of weakness.”  But I feel I owe one to many of you who have been emailing me the last several weeks.

You see, when I wrote back on February 9th that I wanted to “adopt” Nevadans who didn’t think they were being properly represented by their elected legislators, I had no idea how many conservative “orphans” there were all over our state.

Maybe I should have.

I remember a conversation I had recently with a GOP colleague who said they never respond to emails from anyone who doesn’t live in their district.  I’m sure that dramatically cuts down on the emails they answer, but doesn’t seem right to me.

After all, the laws we in the Legislature pass affect ALL Nevadans.

Anyway, in response to my “adoption” offer I was FLOODED with emails.  But that’s a GOOD thing.  I LOVE hearing from people across the state and have learned about problems and concerns I otherwise wouldn’t know about.

So keep ‘em coming!

Unfortunately, however, the Democrat leaders who have kept the public locked out of the legislative building also refused to allow me to hire an administrative assistant to work out of my office.  So I got WAY behind in responding to you.

Finally started catching up yesterday.  And hope to be faster and more responsive to you from here on out.  I apologize for the delay and didn’t want y’all to think I was just blowing you off.

Now, a word about what’s going on here in the Carson City swamp…

While Democrats continue to refuse to hear my bill to IMMEDIATELY terminate Gov. Sisolak’s “Declaration of Emergency” and re-open the state 100%, committees have had time to a hear a bunch of other “important” issues over the past couple of days…

  • Hearing on birthing centers
  • Hearing on allowing people to eat roadkill
  • Hearing on HOA board voting
  • Hearing on declawing cats

That last one is typical liberal lunacy: It’s inhumane to declaw a cat but it’s perfectly OK to chemically castrate a child if a parent wants to change their gender?  Can’t make this stuff up.

If all this sounds bad – and it is – trust me, it’s actually worse.  A lot worse.

And, sadly, too many of my GOP colleagues are just rolling with the punches and going along to get along.

Minority Leader Robin Titus complained in an op-ed today that “we are halfway done with the 81st legislative session and have had zero Republican bills voted on the Assembly floor.”

She also complained in an April Fool’s Day video this morning about the building not being open.

But what is she DOING about it?

I’m just a “caucus of one.”  Or as Steve Sebelius of the Las Vegas Review-Journal good-naturedly put it, “Political Orphan Annie.”  But I’m on the floor of the Assembly fighting for YOU – including my “adopted” constituents – every day.

On the other hand, Ms. Titus is the Assembly Republican LEADER.  She has power, tools and leverage at her disposal that I could only dream about as a freshman legislator.  If she’s not going to lead as the leader of an opposition party…maybe it’s time for a new leader?

I’m just saying.

P.S.  Because I’m finally getting caught up on my emails, today’s AnnieGram Mailbag is filled to the brim.  Thank you for all your kind words!  Your support means so much. Whenever I get frustrated, your notes remind me why I came to Carson City in the first place.

Have a great Easter weekend, everyone!

It’s an open road because no other Republican has been brave enough to do what you are doing!” – Linda Cannon

  • “First off, thank you for your never-ending fight for the rights of Nevadans. It’s time to name the Republican assembly members (RINOs) who don’t support the people of Nevada and work with the socialist democrats who try to ruin this state. They need to be primaried with true Republicans, not RINOs!  Keep up the good work.” – Rick Crain

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“True fact: the FEC now requires the AP (Associated Press) to print, at the bottom of every story, ‘I’m Joe Biden, and I approve this message.’” – Sen. Ted Cruz

“Joe Biden’s $2.5 trillion infrastructure spending bill is only off by about, oh, $2.5 trillion. For those public works projects that are truly ‘public’ the state and local governments should lead, not Uncle Sam. There is no reason why someone living in Montana should have to pay for the New York subway system.” – Steve Moore, Committee to Unleash Prosperity

“DISGRACEFUL! Some Nevada unemployment claimants getting locked out of accounts. The nincompoops at @DetrNevada have had over a year & they still don’t have a clue! @GovSisolak needs to fire all top managers! Bozo the Clown would be better!” – Bruce Feher

The Brutal Reality “Killer Coddlers” Don’t Want You to Remember

by Annie Black March 27, 2021
written by Annie Black

(Annie Black) – Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson announced this week that he was moving forward with scheduling the execution of death row inmate Zane Floyd as legislators mull a pair of bills to abolish capital punishment in Nevada.

“Our legislative leaders should recognize that there are some people who commit such heinous acts,” Wolfson told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in an interview on Friday, “whether it be the particular type of murder or the number of people killed, that this community has long felt should receive the death penalty.”

And the Killer Coddlers are having a cow over it.

“Doing that with someone’s life is inappropriate,” former federal public defender Franny Forsman bemoaned.

Inappropriate with someone’s life?  Seriously?

Wanna talk about doing something “inappropriate” with people’s lives?  Let’s look back at what Floyd did to get on death row in the first place…

Early in the morning of June 3rd, 1999, Floyd summoned a young woman, Tracie Carter, from an escort service to his home.   Police reported that “as soon as she walked in the door (Floyd) grabbed her, handcuffed and taped her, then raped and sodomized her.”

Afterwards, Floyd walked to a neighborhood grocery store in Las Vegas and executed four complete strangers at random with a 12-gauge shotgun he had hidden under his robe.

He shot Thomas Darnell, a mentally disabled man who was organizing shopping carts, in the back twice before shooting and killing Chuck Leos in the neck and face.  Then Dennis Sargeant, who left behind a 6-year-old son.

Floyd next shot 60-year-old Lucille Tarantino – a grandmother who begged Floyd for her life – in the head at point-blank range. “I looked right at her,” he confessed after his arrest, “and I just, I just, just blew her head apart.”

Floyd then chased down and critically injured a fifth victim, 21-year-old Zachary Emenegger, who only survived by pretending he was dead on the floor.

Doing THAT to the lives of those six people is FAR more than “inappropriate.”

The rampage took only seven minutes, and Floyd was arrested outside the store as he tried to flee.  After his arrest he confessed to a detective: “Call me crazy, psychotic, whatever. I’ve just always wanted to know what it’s like to shoot someone.”

If you have the stomach for it, you can watch video clips of the rampage, including Floyd hunting down Mr. Emenegger in the store.  Click here.

Zane Floyd brutally gave four innocent people the death penalty that day.

He should get the same.  And the sooner the better.

From the AnnieGram Mailbag

  • “Keep the death penalty, make them pay for their crime. Don’t honor them or let them get away with what they have done. Let them know there is a price to pay.” – Bob Terhune
  • “Why would you pay for all these killers to get healthcare, food and TV for life? Keep (the death penalty) and use it.” – Brian Murphy
  • “I support the death penalty especially for those who murder children.” – Frederick Bianchi
  • “Start using it. Let’s move to firing squad.” – John Gabriel

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“Zane Floyd began chasing his panicking victims. One by one, workers were shot at close range as they fled for their lives, their blood smearing the polished aisles of the Albertsons store.” – CBS News, 6/3/99

“We could see the gunman walking by, a deliberate, quiet walk, sweeping the gun from side to side, like a hunter stalking his prey. … He just wanted to kill people.  I thought I was dead. God, I thought I was dead.” – Unnamed witness to the Zane Floyd massacre

Death to the Death Penalty in Nevada?  Where Do You Stand?

by Annie Black March 26, 2021
written by Annie Black

(Annie Black) – Social justice warriors are back in Carson City this year attempting to abolish capital punishment in Nevada.

Two bills to eliminate the death penalty have been introduced: Democratic state Sen. James Ohrenschall is sponsoring Senate Bill 228 and Democrat Assemblyman Steve Yeager is spearheading Assembly Bill 395.

The bleeding hearts over at Battle Born Progress support the bills and have hopped up on their self-righteous moral high horse, calling capital punishment an “outdated, unjust practice.”

Is it?  Let’s take a look…

In a letter-to-the-editor published today by the Las Vegas Sun, social justice warrior Katie Durante claims: “There is little to no evidence that the death penalty serves as a deterrent.”

Ridiculous.  Every single murderer who has been executed has been permanently deterred from ever killing anyone again.

On the other hand, murderers sentenced to life in prison continue to have the ability to take innocent lives…and have done so.  In fact, the Associated Press reported just last month that…

“An Indiana inmate convicted of a 2002 triple murder fatally stabbed one corrections officer and seriously injured another at the maximum-security prison where he’s serving a 130-year sentence.”

Tymetri Campbell gave prison guard Lt. Eugene Lasco a death sentence.  No trial.  No due process.  Campbell appointed himself judge, jury and executioner-by-jagged-knife.

Lt. Lasco – who came to the aid of another guard who was being attacked and stabbed multiple times by Campbell – was a U.S. Navy veteran who will never come home again to his wife, his two children, his three step-children and his nine grandchildren.

According to his obituary, Lt. Lasco “was a gregarious individual who loved music, and was an active supporter of the Special Olympics, taking the Polar Plunge to raise money and awareness.”

And we’re supposed to weep over Tymetri Campbell?  I don’t think so.

Had Campbell been given the death sentence instead of a prison sentence, Lt. Lasco would be alive today.

Ms. Durante, naturally, also plays the race card, referring to the death penalty as a “racially disparate relic of lynching.”  She maintains that 40% of death row inmates are black while more than 75% of murder victims are white.

So according to Ms. Durante, a disparate number of blacks are killing a disparate number of whites, and we’re supposed to feel sorry for…the murderers?

Sorry, but if you take an innocent life you should lose your guilty life regardless of the race of the killer or the victims.  Don’t want to be executed?  Simple.  Don’t commit murder!

Now here’s an inconvenient truth:  Since 1976, twelve people have had their death sentences carried out.  Only one was black, one was Hispanic, one was Asian and NINE were white.

You could look it up.

Ms. Durante and her fellow “Killer Coddlers” also trot out the cost argument, saying it costs taxpayers more to house death row inmates than life-in-prison-inmates.  But there’s a reason for that…

We’re not promptly carrying out the death sentences handed down by JURIES and affirmed by judges on appeal.

If we’re going to have the death penalty for the worst-of-the-worst murderers who take innocent lives – permanently destroying the lives of the victim’s families – then we need to use it.

Once carried out, the taxpayer expense for feeding, clothing, housing and providing medical care for the murderer drops to ZERO.

The answer to the taxpayer expense argument isn’t to eliminate capital punishment, but to eliminate the roadblocks that allow guilty murderers to abuse the system and string out the process for decades.

I know this is an emotional issue.  What do you think?  I want to hear from you.  Shoot an email on this, or any other issue, to: Annie.Black@asm.state.nv.us

Open the Building

On Thursday evening, the new Virgin Hotel in Las Vegas had its grand opening, putting some 2,000 Nevadans back to work.  Wonderful news!

Unfortunately, Democrats in Carson City continue to keep the doors to the Nevada Legislature locked to the public.  That’s wrong.  If you agree, please sign my “Open the Building” online petition by clicking the link below…
