Why the June 9 GOP Primary REALLY IS the Most Important Election of Our Time

(Annie Black) – Barring some miracle, when you receive this letter much of Nevada will still be closed.

You might still be out of a job.  You might still be trying to collect unemployment.  You might still be confined to your home.

You might have been ordered to wear a mask.  Even if outside.  Even if you’re walking alone with no one around you.

All by order of one man: Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak.

FDR famously said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

Not even remotely true – as we witness constitutional liberties in Nevada being wiped out on an almost daily basis.

On April Fool’s Day, ironically, Gov. Sisolak unilaterally declared that “all Nevadans are ordered to stay in their residences.”  At least until the middle of May.  Maybe longer.

Effectively…house arrest.  For law-abiding citizens.  Without consultation with or approval from the Nevada Legislature.

This is dangerous.  This is legitimately something to fear.

Unchecked government power has historically resulted in the government and political leaders seeking even more power.  That’s why Thomas Jefferson warned…

“Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”

Right now, there is absolutely no vigilance over Gov. Sisolak’s authoritarian actions.  And rarely has been heard a discouraging word from any of our elected legislators.

Including our own AWOL state assemblyman, Chris Edwards.

In our Declaration of Independence, the Founding Fathers declared that Americans “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

“Unalienable” means “unable to be taken away from.”

Rights.  Not “permissions.”  God-given rights.  Including your rights to free speech, peacefully assemble…and even worship.

Then there’s your Fourteenth Amendment rights…

“No State shall make or enforce any law (that deprives) any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

Many of you have lost your job or had your business closed down thanks to Gov. Sisolak’s universal declarations without even a hint of due process or equal protection.

As Clinton adviser Paul Begala once put it: “Stroke of the pen. Law of the land. Kinda cool.”

No.  It’s not “cool” at all.  It’s frightening.

It’s the job of elected officials to PROTECT our rights, not strip them away.  Yet that’s exactly what Gov. Sisolak’s been doing.

Making matters worse, the governor has single-handedly decided which businesses are “essential” and which are “non-essential.”

This has resulted in, for example, liquor stores being designated as non-essential while grocery and convenience stores that sell liquor have been designated essential.

And while the governor has allowed people to shop inside Walmart and Target, other retailers have only been allowed to provide curbside pick-up service or home delivery.

That’s decidedly NOT equal protection.  That’s a governor using self-declared powers to pick winners and losers in this crisis.  It’s just plain wrong.

Sadly, Assemblyman Edwards has stood by silently the whole time this has gone on.  He’s been AWOL.  Missing in action.

That’s a big reason why I’m running against him.

We need a fighter, not a spectator.

The governor has kept his authoritarian power for over six weeks now, with no expiration date in sight.  It’s LONG past time for the Legislature to be called into a Special Session…

Something I called for way back on March 20 – just three days after the #SisolakShutdown was announced.  And something I’ve called for at the “Re-Open Nevada” rallies I’ve organized in Mesquite over the last couple of weekends.

If we’re going to be denied of our rights, then every elected legislator should be on record either defending Gov. Sisolak – or defending the Constitution.

Yet as of the date this AnnieGram went to print, Assemblyman Edwards STILL hasn’t called for a Special Session.

Instead, he’s stood by and watched your rights being stripped away, one-by-one, step-by-step…without a peep of protest.

When he was sworn into office, Chris took an oath to “support, protect and defend the Constitution and Government of the United States” and the State of Nevada.

By his inaction, Assemblyman Edwards has abandoned the responsibilities of his office.

He simply hasn’t had the courage to speak out loudly on behalf of your unalienable rights.

That’s why I say this June 9 GOP primary election for Assembly District 19 is so important.

Since no Democrat filed for this office, whoever wins the primary will be the person representing you in Carson City next year – when some very tough decisions will have to be made.

Assemblyman Edwards will do what he’s always done: Go along to get along.  Vote for more spending.  Vote for higher taxes.

I’ll do what I’ve been doing since the #SisolakShutdown began…

  • Fight for you.
  • Fight for your job.
  • Fight for your business.
  • Fight for your family.
  • Fight for your constitutional rights.

If you want a fighter, not a fan-in-the-stands, representing you in the Nevada Legislature in 2021, I’d appreciate your vote.
